Central US States Cemetery Research Information

North Dakota - South Dakota - Nebraska - Kansas

The rolling plains, low mountain ranges and wide open spaces of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas combine to create a beautiful, serene picture of America’s heartland.  Quaint towns, bustling cities and lone prairies stretch through this central region of the United States as symbols of the country’s rich, diverse landscape.

Minnesota Cemeteries
Minnesota, known as the Land of 10,000 lakes, is celebrated for its friendly people, prairie grasslands and dense forests.  The towns and cities that fill the region evoke the western European and Scandinavian heritage of the original settlers that came to the area hundreds of years ago.  The extreme winters seem to excite Minnesota natives, where favorite winter sports, holidays and family gatherings are simply a good excuse to get together and make some wonderful memories.

South Dakota Cemeteries
In the Black Hills of South Dakota, where low, pine-covered mountains lumber across the land, perhaps one of the most recognized national monuments -- Mount Rushmore -- stands proud.  Carved into the steep granite rock are the sixty-foot likenesses of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt, together representing one hundred and fifty years of United States history.  Both South and North Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas all contain sections of the infamous Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, the path that the explorers traveled into the uncharted west.  Their documentation of never before seen flora and fauna, as well as the topography of this territory, introduced Americans to a previously unknown world.

Kansas Cemeteries
Kansas also has plenty of historic tales to tell, where Wild Bill Hickok served as a deputy and Dodge City was a rough and tumble frontier town.  Today the wheat fields of this Great Plains state still sway peacefully under skies that tumble endlessly into the horizon.

Nebraska Cemeteries
Nebraska is another sight to behold, with vast prairies filled with crops and ranches consisting of thousands of acres of unspoiled land.  Here you can witness herds of elk and the once numerous American bison.

The history of these frontier states is told through the many idyllic cemeteries that are found the area, such as the DeSmet Cemetery in South Dakota, where the parents and sisters of the famous American author Laura Ingalls Wilder are interred.  Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas, is another national treasure, and if the final resting place of many brave Americans that fought in the Civil War and Indian War, including eight Medal of Honor recipients.

Although this region is often referred to as “where the west begins,” with such natural wonders and an underlying spirit of kindness and national pride, the central states of the U.S. can also be described as a bit of heaven on earth.
