Forest Hill and Calvary Cemeteries, which are two adjacent cemeteries under the same management, have served generations of Kansas City and surrounding community residents for decades. Originally founded in 1888, the sprawling acreage of the cemetery properties offers beautiful, peaceful and serene resting places as well as comforting locations for visiting family members and loved ones. The cemetery property is also an historical landmark in the area, having been the site of a battle in the Civil War in 1864. A rock wall that follows the southern section of the cemetery property stands as it did during the battle. Because of its rich history, the cemetery properties have served as a final resting place of many area notables including politicians, Civil War soldiers and officers, including Brigadier General Joseph Shelby, who made his stand at the rock wall on the south side of the property. Pioneer families, their descendents as well as sports figures, including Satchel Paige, are also buried there. Staff at Forest Hill and Calvary Cemeteries strive to meet the needs of area residents regardless of religion, heritage or race. The cemeteries offer not only traditional in-ground burial, but also aboveground mausoleum entombment, or cremation niche inurnment for those choosing cremation. Recently, Forest Hill and Calvary staff has also added green burials to their offerings, with burials taking place in beautiful and undeveloped areas around the property. The cemetery also offers a variety of memorial benches, upright granite monuments, markers and bronze memorials. Located in Jackson County, the cemetery is a beautiful, green and shaded property well maintained by groundskeepers and rich in historical significance and design. Natural stone posts, wrought iron fencing and beautifully designed landscaping offer a breathtaking view in all directions. The cemetery properties are located due south of Kansas City and southwest of Independence along Interstate 35, which turns into State Highway 71 heading south. Visitors can access the property by turning west on E. Gregory Boulevard, with the properties located at the corner of Gregory Boulevard and Troost Avenue. |
