Gulf Coast Cemetery Research Information

Texas - Louisiana - Oklahoma - Alabama - Mississippi

Tranquil waves, sandy beaches, and hot, sultry nights are all a part of the Gulf Coast lifestyle.  The flowing rivers running throughout Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Mississippi feed into the Gulf of Mexico, dissecting barrier islands, salt grass marshes, lush woodlands, and prairies.  Life’s pace in this part of the country is unhurried and easy.

Rolling hills, plains, and marshlands make up the diverse landscape of the Gulf Coast region.  A scatter of small towns along with some of the country’s largest cities make up the beautiful scenery that is home to an array of people and wildlife alike.  The comforting melody of chirping crickets can be heard at nightfall, echoing through the Southern nights along with the crooking of the bull frog.

From the Texas Revolution to the Mexican-American War, the Gulf Coast’s historical roots run deep.   Texas fought Mexico for its freedom at the Alamo and the San Jacinto Battleground while the U.S. fought Mexico in the region during the Mexican-American War. The first French and Spanish settlers’ made their mark on the Gulf Coast with the French introducing the highly celebrated Mardi Gras in the 18th century.

Diverse cultures, varied scenery, and a rich history are the hallmarks of the beautiful Gulf Coast.  Louisiana’s Creole and Cajun influences are responsible for delectable dishes and entertaining music.  It is also home to Metairie Cemetery in the southern city of Metairie.  Previously a horse racing track, the cemetery has a large collection of funeral statuary, marble tombs and even a pseudo-Egyptian pyramid.

Alabama, known as the Heart of Dixie, sports the magnificent Gulf Shores and Orange Beach while Mississippi proudly claims the likes of Elvis Presley, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams and President Jefferson Davis as just a few of its famous natives .

The Texas landscape boasts beautiful hills in the west, wooded wonderlands in central Texas and breezy seashores along the east coast.  It is also the home of Texas State Cemetery located in the capital city of Austin.  During the Civil War, this twenty two acre cemetery was expanded into a Confederate resting place and is now where prominent Texans and their spouses are interred.

Oklahoma’s Native American heritage has created numerous state sponsored arts, community and tourism programs. And Oklahoma’s breathtaking Ouachita, Arbuckle, Witchita and Kiamichi Mountains are sights to behold and just one more reason to love the historic Gulf Coast.
