Lakewood Cemetery has been serving the needs of Minneapolis residents since the late 1800s. The facility offers a beautiful, well-manicured, secure and loving environment to lay loved ones to rest and surrounds the departed with an aura of dignity and compassion. Staff at Lakewood Cemetery offer a variety of services including its cremation, vaults, monuments and a variety of property and locations to meet most needs. The Memorial Chapel and Community Mausoleum can seat roughly 200 guests and offers some of the most beautiful stained glass, mosaics, domed ceilings, and artwork that commemorate respect, honor and dignity. The Lakewood Memorial Chapel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is modeled after the historic Hagia Sophia cathedral located in Istanbul, Turkey. The Memorial Community Mausoleum and Columbarium has offered decades of peace and serenity to individuals, including a Pool of Reflections and garden crypts that connect to various areas of the chapel and mausoleum. A Tree of Remembrance memorializes loved ones with names and dates of individuals who have been cremated and their ashes scattered in other locations. The grounds of Lakewood Cemetery cover over 250 acres and offer over 10 miles of winding paths and roads as well as a small lake, offering visitors and loved ones the opportunity to stroll through the quiet and peaceful grounds, and admire the multitude of floral and shrubbery arrangements. The grounds are well kept throughout the year, giving Lakewood Cemetery one of the best reputations in Minneapolis known for its landscaping. The grounds serve as a final resting place for Minneapolis founders, politicians, sports figures and civil war era soldiers including Civil War Union Army Officer John Bigelow and Civil War Congressional Medal Of Honor recipient Stephen Chandler. Civil War era statues and monuments grace the property, as do statues and memorials from generations past. Situated to the south west of downtown Minneapolis in Hennepin County, the grounds of Lakewood Cemetery may be accessed via Interstate 394 or State Route 52 with a turnoff on Hennepin Avenue toward Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun. Located between Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet, Lakewood Cemetery is one of the most beautiful in the area and is a thin easy driving distance of downtown Minneapolis and surrounding amenities. |
