Mid-Atlantic States Cemetery Research Information

New York - New Jersey - Pennsylvania - Delaware - Maryland - Virginia - West Virginia - D.C.

Cultural diversity, bustling cities and beautiful landscapes are the hallmark of the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.  Encompassing New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington D.C., this area is ripe with natural beauty and historic treasures.  Not only were these states key in the development of the country, they also served as the seat of America’s “melting pot” which welcomed European immigrants of all walks of life into the American culture at the turn of the last century.

In the wooded mountains, farmlands and meadow regions of these states, Americans fought for freedom in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.  Battlefields, historic sites and museums pay tribute to and memorialize the sacrifices made by America’s forefathers.  Large metropolitan areas including New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore offer world class cultural events and renowned architecture.  Neighborhood districts allow fascinating glimpses into the authentic old-world cultures that merged to make each of these cities unique.  In contrast, smaller towns that dot the countryside host charming festivals centered around rich agricultural and folk traditions.  The monuments found in the nation’s capital as well as the bright beacon held high in the hand of the Statue of Liberty are just a few prominent structures present in the Mid-Atlantic states that are symbols of American freedom known throughout the world.

The beauty of this region is unparalleled and a joy to behold.  To the east, sweeping beaches look out to the turquoise waters of the Atlantic coast.  Sailboats glide along the shore as the sun sets upon the sparkling ocean.  To the west, forested mountain ranges such as the Appalachians rise above the horizon, filled with the spectacular native flora and fauna.  Magnificent waterfalls, stone outcroppings, meandering trails, slow rivers and flowing creeks provide quiet places for contemplation and introspection.

New York Cemeteries
The region is also home to many historically significant cemeteries and mausoleums.  In the serene residential hamlet of Hartsdale in New York. Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum can be found.   Constructed in 1928, Ferncliff Mausoleum’s classic architecture and peaceful setting is where such famous people as Ed Sullivan, Joan Crawford, and Judy Garland are interred.

Washington D.C. Cemeteries
Across the Potomac River in Washington D.C., Arlington National Cemetery is perhaps the most well known Unites States cemetery.  Established during the American Civil War, the cemetery has more than 300,000 burial sites belonging to veterans from the American Revolution to the current Iraq War.  Arlington is also the resting place of Presidents John F. Kennedy and William Taft.

Pennsylvania Cemeteries
Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address at what later became Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg National Cemetery.  Dedicated in 1863, the cemetery is the final resting place of veterans of a number of American wars from the Mexican-American War to the present day Iraq War.

The states of the Mid-Atlantic are home to many moving reminders of the storied history of the United States and the location of some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the world.  To admire this region is to appreciate the people and places that make America great.
