Midwest Cemetery Cemetery Research Information

Wisconsin - Iowa - Illinois - Michigan - Missouri - Indiana - Ohio

Known for its friendly people, charming small towns, bustling cities, and welcoming landscapes, the Midwest region of America makes all who visit feel that they’ve come home.  Nestled in the heart of the country, the states of Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana and Ohio unroll their verdant fields where much of the country’s produce is cultivated.  The rich history of this area is steeped in the traditions of the different peoples who settled in the region.  The presence of the multitudes of immigrants who landed in these states is still felt, and the traditions and culture of their home countries is found in pockets throughout the countryside.

Historical characters of legendary status originated in this area, great explorers like Lewis and Clark, many United States Presidents, and even fabled men such as Johnny Appleseed are known for their Midwestern ties.  Great cities sprang up out of the industry that was the heartbeat of these states, Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Cleveland, all played a vital role in the world-changing turn-of-the-last-century industrial revolution.  The hard work and ingenuity that was required to build the automotive, railroad, meat-packing and coal industries, to name a few, is still evident in this region today.  Hard work, in fact, is a hallmark of Midwestern mentality and it shows in the success and spirit of the people who live there.

The landscape of the Midwestern countryside is also impressive.  Where the prairies of Illinois and Indiana allow a sweeping view across the horizon, the hills and valleys of Missouri and Wisconsin contain wonderful lakes and rivers.  Lake Michigan and Lake Erie are magnificent bodies of water, two of the five Great Lakes, with forests that line lovely beaches.  These waterfront spots are perfect for a quiet walk enjoying the solitude of nature, as well as boisterous memory making with family and friends.

Illinois Cemeteries
Many great Midwesterners are laid to rest in this beautiful region, including America’s sixteenth President Abraham Lincoln.  His tomb is found in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, where his wife and all but one of their children are also buried.  Although he was not born in Illinois, Lincoln insisted on being buried in his adopted hometown, and Oak Ridge is now the second most visited cemetery in the United States.  Chicago’s cemeteries also contain many of America’s most notable people, including Enrico Fermi, Marshall Field, Oscar Mayer and Jesse Owens.

For centuries Americans have enjoyed the bounty of the Midwest.  A vibrant area with a reputation or hard work and strong family values, this beautiful region welcomes visitors as friends.
