Mount Vernon Cemetery is one of several clustered in northwestern Philadelphia that is rich in tradition and history. Bounded on the east by the enormous and second oldest cemetery in the United States, Laurel Hill Cemetery and on the north by Mount Peace and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Mount Vernon Cemetery is rich in history and tradition of one of the oldest cities in the country. Serving as a hallowed resting place for Philadelphia residents since the late 1800s, Mount Vernon Cemetery is the resting place of several members of the famous Barrymore acting family, as well as Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Alfred Sellers. Located on the banks of the Schuylkill River to the west and only a short distance from the Delaware River on the east, Mount Vernon Cemetery may be accessed off of Interstate 76 and State Route 13, or West Hunting Park Avenue.
