Mountain States Cemetery Research Information

Montana - Wyoming - Utah - Colorado

The history and spirit of the Old West lives on in magnificent terrain of Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.  The Rocky Mountains are but one range that cuts an impressive path through this region, ripe with natural wonders, laid-back people and legendary tales.  Defined by a desire to expand and explore, the states in this area are rich in historical treasures and known for larger-than-life characters that hail from majestic mountain environs.

The unparalleled beauty of Yellowstone National Park is a sight to behold, with sections of the park in both Montana and Wyoming.  Visitors descend from all over the world to enjoy the splendor of the Old Faithful geyser, as well as to catch a glimpse of one of the grizzly bears native to the area.  Other natural attractions in this group of states includes the breathtaking Devil’s Mountain in Wyoming, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and the summit of Mt. Elbert in Colorado, which is the highest elevation in the Rocky Mountains at 14,440 feet.

Thousands of years of Native American tradition is also prevalent in the Mountain states, where modern Reservations abound and evidence of ancient groups can be found in abundance.  The cave dwellings at Mesa Verde in southern Colorado are one such example, and serve as a testament to the ingenuity of the people who built them.  The history of the American railroad is an important aspect of this part of the country, where teams of workers toiled to cut through the foreboding country in the 1800s.  These states were also central to the Gold Rush in the 1800s, at which point many of the major cities still in existence today were formed.  Denver, Salt Lake City, Billings and Cheyenne were all frontier towns at one point that served as a gateway to the west.

Many of these mountain states’ founding fathers are buried in peaceful cemeteries surrounded by the vast open skies.  Legendary gunfighter Doc Holliday is interred at Pioneer Cemetery in Glenwood Springs, and the gravesite of William “Buffalo Bill” Cody can be visited in Golden.  In Provo City Cemetery in Utah, the World War II heroics of Eddie Kimball whose air/sea rescues are credited with saving the lives of 9,000 Navy pilots.

No matter where one stands in this section of the country, perhaps the well-known lyric “Purple Mountain’s Majesty” describes this region best.  The scenic mountain ranges that tower above picturesque valleys, awe-inspiring waterfalls, rushing rivers and quaint mountain towns, are the heart of this territory.  To see this remarkable landscape as well as the monuments of the pioneer era is to be inspired by the unflagging American spirit and to be grateful for the beauty that surrounds us.
