Southwest Cemetery Research Information

North Carolina - South Carolina - Arkansas - Kentucky - Tennessee - Georgia - Florida

Swaying palm trees, tranquil beaches where gentle waves lap upon the shore and emerald green fields where thoroughbreds frolic are all hallmarks of life in the southeastern region of the United States.  From the southern tip of Florida to the mountains of North Carolina, this area is full of natural wonder and recalls an era in American history of chivalry, charm and a relaxed quality of life.

The history of the southeast is rich, from the earliest Spanish explorers who settled and built imposing forts in Florida to the battles that raged in mountains and plains during the Civil War.  Reminders of the Old South exist today in monuments and museums that tell the story of the sometimes difficult period in American history.  Visitors can witness the grandeur of Stone Mountain, Georgia, with its larger than life carving set into towering rock face as well as the memorials to the civil rights workers in the 1960s.  All of these edifices stand as tribute to the trying times that moved America closer to fulfilling the promise of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

A journey through the south reveals a rich agricultural tradition, where farmers still work the land growing vital crops that Americans have depended on for centuries.  A deep devotion to the arts is also an integral part of the Southern experience, with beautiful examples of architecture, regional music, sculpture and textiles that are unique to each state within this region.  Vibrant cities such as Atlanta, Orlando and Raleigh dot the terrain like beehives of activity in an otherwise slow-paced world.

The gravesites of many famous Americans are found in the peaceful cemeteries of the southeast, such as Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.  Here Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind, rests, as well as Maynard H. Jackson, the first African-American mayor of Atlanta.  Just to the north, the lush Kentucky countryside is the location of the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, in Louisville, the burial site of America’s 12th President.

The landscape of the South is varied and magnificent, the majestic peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains that rise above the verdant fields and valleys of North and South Carolina and Alabama are breathtaking.  The rolling hills and farmlands of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia merge into the sparkling beaches of the Florida peninsula where tropical breezes gather and refresh.  The aquamarine waters of the Atlantic Ocean ebb and flow endlessly not unlike the life force that runs through the people and places of this region of the United States.
